Herodias

People · Updated 2026-05-04

Herodias belongs to the Baptist detention and execution material that the UPDV now treats as omitted material. Canonical Matthew 14:3-12 and Mark 6:17-29 identify her in connection with Herod Antipas, John the Baptist, the unlawful-marriage charge, and the banquet execution scene; Luke 3:19-20 gives a compressed detention/rebuke seam that names Herodias but does not include the banquet scene. Those units are not retained in the UPDV running text under the source-composition decisions recorded in Variant Exceptions.

The in-scope Gospel text keeps only the brief beheading notices: Herod says, "John, whom I beheaded, he is risen" (Mr 6:16), and later, "John I beheaded: but who is this, about whom I hear such things?" (Lu 9:9). Those notices do not retain the Herodias explanation. For readers looking for topics that fall inside omitted pericopes, see Topics Not Included in UPDV from Editorially Omitted Pericopes.
